Although it had existed informally for a number of years, mainly as a vehicle for a variety of open source java projects, Beaglebuddy Software formally came into being in January of 2008 when it was incorporated by joneric Wennerstrom. The company's name was inspired by a collection of dogs that came to live on his parent's house in rural Virginia. The owner's brother, Hans, gave the dogs their collective name based on an episode of Benson he had once seen. The name stuck, and they've been called that ever since.
The Beaglebuddy Tab Editor project started in May of 2007. The author of the Power Tab Editor, Brad Larson, finally released the file format for the 1.70 version of his tab editor. The source code for reading and writing power tab files was written in c++ and Microsoft's MFC libaray. Joneric wrote a java library to read power tab files and released the code back to the power tab development community.
After Brad Larson released the 1.70 version of the power tab editor back in September of 2000, it was subsequently announced that a 2.0 version was in the works. This was to be a complete rewrite from the ground up. Unfortunately, the next version never materialized. For whatever reasons, either time constraints, changing priorities, life's pressures, etc, it seems Brad was never able to complete the long awaited 2.0 version. He may still be working on it, taking a break from it, or may have given up on it altogether.
While the 1.70 version of the power tab editor is quite good, and does a great job of creating professional looking tabs, it does have some limitations and some bugs. This, along with the lack of a new version of power tab, was the impetus for the Beaglebuddy Tab editor project. So hopefully we'll finish the Beaglebuddy Tab Editor and have a first release around July of 2009.
